Is podcast advertising worth it?
Sorting the evidence by who paid for it
Most “podcast ads outperform” statistics trace to platforms, networks, and measurement vendors: parties paid when you believe them. That does not make the claims false; it makes them unusable as planning inputs. The non-vendor layer is thinner but real: IAB’s annual revenue reporting documents a multi-billion-dollar market that thousands of advertisers keep re-buying (revealed preference, not a lab result), and Edison Research’s Infinite Dial series independently documents large, sustained listening. Note the shape of those two facts: they prove the channel is big and listened to, not that it will work for you. Nothing proves that except your test.
Clearly worth it for
Products whose buyers cluster around identifiable shows; order economics that tolerate the modeled $120-130 CAC of the $15k worked example (high AOV, strong repeat rate, or B2B contract values where the tolerance math is forgiving); and teams willing to wire up measurement before spending. DTC with promo-code checkout and B2B SaaS with demo forms both qualify.
Clearly not worth it for
Impulse products under $20 AOV with no repeat purchase (the CAC math has no path); purely local businesses outside the geo-targeted routes; anyone who cannot name five shows their buyers listen to (audience fit is the whole game); and teams that will not commit measurement before launch. An unmeasured podcast campaign is a donation with production costs.
The cheapest way to find out
Model your numbers in the Test Modeler, then buy the smallest test that can move your decision: the $500 pulse check if you need any signal, the $2,500 two-show test if you need a per-show winner. Either way you exit with a number instead of an opinion.
