What is the difference between host-read and programmatic podcast ads?
| Axis | Host-read | Programmatic |
|---|---|---|
| Who voices it | The show's host, in their own style | An announcer or your produced spot |
| How it is inserted | Recorded into or served with the host's episode | Dynamically inserted across matching inventory |
| How it is bought | Marketplace quotes or direct deals, per show | Self-serve platforms and DSPs, by audience |
| Published price | $24-26 CPM (Libsyn 60s card); Acast from $25 | From $12 CPM (Libsyn); Acast pre-recorded from $15 |
| What you control | The show and the copy points | The audience, geo, and frequency |
| What you risk | Paying a premium for unproven trust transfer | Being wallpaper: heard, not noticed |
What the premium buys, and how sure we are
The price gap is published fact . The performance gap is murkier: the evidence that host-reads convert better comes overwhelmingly from sellers of host-reads, so this site treats trust transfer as a plausible mechanism you test, not a law you assume. The mechanism is at least coherent: listeners chose the host, and endorsement borrows that choice. Whether it is worth roughly double the CPM for your product is precisely what a two-show test measures.
Which first, by situation
Budget under $1,000: programmatic, because host-read buys barely fit (the tier math). Testing a trust-dependent product (supplements, financial services, anything bought on confidence): host-read, because that is the thesis. Testing pure audience reach or geo (local businesses): programmatic. Mixing both comes later, at the $50k-quarter scale, where the mix itself produces the per-format CAC comparison.
