What is dynamic ad insertion in podcasts?

Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) stitches your ad into an episode at the moment each listener downloads it, which makes ads swappable, geo-targetable, and stoppable. Baked-in ads are recorded into the episode file itself and play forever, including in back catalog. Most large-platform inventory today is dynamic.

Why the industry went dynamic

DAI turned podcast episodes from fixed print runs into ad servers: sellers monetize back catalog with current campaigns, buyers get flighting and geo control, and measurement counts served impressions under IAB’s podcast measurement guidelines rather than estimating from episode downloads. The pricing consequence: dynamic inventory trades close to media-market logic (the published CPM structures), while baked-in placements price like sponsorships: flat, negotiated, per deal.

The baked-in case, still

A baked-in host-read in a beloved show’s episode compounds: every future back-catalog listener hears it, at no additional cost to you. Creator-direct deals on Podcorn often ship baked-in, which is part of why flat fees there should be judged on expected lifetime downloads, not first-month numbers. The trade is control: a baked-in mistake (dead URL, expired offer) is permanent. Use evergreen codes and URLs in baked-in placements, never dated promotions.

Can you choose?

On platforms and marketplaces, mostly no: Acast is DAI-native, Spotify serves dynamically, and Libsyn Ads host-reads run through dynamic infrastructure. Creator-direct is where baked-in still lives as a choice. Ask; the answer changes what your billing means and how long your money works.
