What is a podcast CPM?

CPM is cost per thousand delivered units. In podcasting the unit is usually a download, most often an episode’s first-30-day downloads. A $25 CPM on a show delivering 20,000 downloads per episode prices one spot at $500: 20,000 divided by 1,000, times $25. Published CPMs currently run $12-30 depending on format.

The unit you are billed on

Generic CPM is an impressions metric; the general version is covered at whatiscpm.com. Podcasting’s wrinkle is that the billable unit is a download or a dynamically-served impression, counted by the hosting or insertion platform, and sellers differ on the window (first 30 days is the common marketplace convention). Before signing anything, get the counting method in writing: whose numbers, what window, downloads or served impressions. The same nominal CPM can differ meaningfully in delivered value depending on those three answers.

Current published ranges

Host-read 60s: $24-26 CPM on the Libsyn Ads public card . Genre CPMs on the same card span $22-30. Acast publishes starting points of $15 (pre-recorded) and $25 (host-read) . Programmatic starts at $12. That is the complete set of published figures; the full matrix with status flags is on the rates hub.

From CPM quote to campaign cost

The formula: cost = downloads ÷ 1,000 x CPM. Worked, matching the Test Modeler: a $2,500 budget at the published $24-26 host-read range buys 96,154-104,167 impressions (2,500 ÷ 26 x 1,000 and 2,500 ÷ 24 x 1,000). Run it in reverse to price a show: 15,000 first-30-day downloads at $25 CPM is $375 per spot.

CPM vs flat-fee sponsorship

Marketplaces price in CPM; creator-direct deals (see Podcorn) price in flat fees. Convert every flat fee into an implied CPM (fee ÷ downloads x 1,000) before comparing. A $300 flat fee on a 5,000-download show is a $60 implied CPM: more than double the published host-read band, whatever the pitch says.

Why podcast CPMs run above display

You are paying for attention density and host trust, not raw reach. Whether that premium pays back is not answerable from rate cards; it is answerable from a measured test, which is what Stage 5 is for.
